What you'll make
Summit 3+3 is a modern, double-layered beanie knit from crown to crown, designed for a warm, polished, fully reversible finish. Starting with a disappearing loop cast-on, you work increases in a classic four-point cross to build the first crown, then knit a long tube of k3p3 ribbing that folds in half to create the double layer. The second crown mirrors the first with symmetrical decreases. A meditative knit with satisfying construction; suitable for adventurous beginners and beyond.
Part of a series
Summit 3+3 is part of the Summit collection: five rib variations that all sum to six (k1p5 through k5p1). This pattern is the 3+3 variant; the other four variants will be released as separate free patterns.
Pattern details
──────────────────────────
Sizes & fit
4 sizes (A to D). Designed to be worn with negative ease for a snug, stretchy fit.
Folded hat inner circumference by size:
A (baby/toddler): 12.25 in (31 cm); B (child/small adult): 14 in (35.5 cm); C (medium adult): 15.75 in (40 cm); D (large adult): 17.5 in (44.5 cm).
Recommended for head circumference:

Yarn weight
Lace weight (or light fingering). Non-superwash or low-superwash merino recommended for best texture and stretch recovery.
Yardage by size
A 370 yds (340 m); B 500 yds (460 m); C 630 yds (580 m); D 770 yds (710 m).
Designed in Catskill Merino Lace. Yarn ideas: Knitting for Olive (KFO) Merino (fingering), KFO Compatible Cashmere (lace), Bilum Yarns Loli (fingering).
Skein counts by size
Catskill Merino Lace (350 yds / 320 m per skein)
A 2, B 2, C 2, D 3
Needles & notions
US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles for magic loop, or DPNs (or any size needles to reach gauge); stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors.
Gauge
54 sts & 44 rounds = 4 in / 10 cm in 3×3 rib (unstretched rib, measured after blocking before forming double layer).
Note: Rib gauge is tricky to measure. Because Summit is designed for negative ease, what matters most for fit is the stockinette stitch gauge.
Construction & skills
Crown-to-crown double-layer construction; disappearing loop cast-on; magic loop or DPNs; kfb, pfb; delayed m1 increases (YO worked into next round); basic decreases (k2tog, ssk, p2tog, ssp); duplicate stitch for finishing. Schematic included. Video support via links & QR codes.
Skill level
Adventurous beginner and beyond.
Swatch note
Rib gauge varies by fiber. Aim for a fabric you like, and adjust needle size as needed. Note that size steps are larger than in many hats (24 stitches between sizes), but ribbing is forgiving and accommodates a range of head circumferences.
Accessibility & format
• Units: metric and imperial throughout.
• Sizing: 4 sizes (A to D) with both stitch counts and finished measurements; all measurements are after blocking.
• Schematic: included, labeled in both cm and inches.
• Links & QR codes: every technique/video is provided as a clickable link (for screens) and a QR code (for print).
• Navigation: clear section headings and page numbers; references inside the pattern match those headings.
• Print-friendly: plain white pages, high-contrast text; critical information is not color-dependent.
• Device-friendly: laid out for comfortable reading on phones/tablets as well as desktop and home printing.
• Bookmarks / internal links: PDF includes bookmarks and in-document links for quick jumps between sections.
• Best viewed in Adobe Acrobat for optimal hyperlink and navigation functionality.
Download options
• This listing includes 5 PDFs: one Clean (All Sizes) file and 4 Size-Specific files (A to D).
• Your download will arrive as a single .zip file. When unzipped, it contains all 5 PDFs.
• Why knitters love the size-specific files: In the Size-Specific PDFs, all numbers for your size are highlighted in color, and sections that don't apply to your size are lightly greyed out. This makes it much easier to follow your instructions without hunting through other sizes or accidentally reading the wrong numbers.
• Content is identical across all editions (metric & imperial, schematic, clickable links + QR codes).
• Printing: highlights remain visible in grayscale; greyed sections are still readable.
• Not sure on size? Start with the Clean (All Sizes) file. You can download any size-specific file at any time.
• Tip: once you identify your size, you may want to keep just that size's PDF on your device for easier reference.
