What you'll make
POV Cowl is a long cowl that wraps twice around the neck, knit in the round from the bottom up with no seams. It uses the same texture as POV Pullover: two-color stripes that alternate between stockinette and reverse stockinette, so each color looks smooth in some places and bumpy in others. Each round is divided into 6 sections, and the texture flips from one section to the next. The markers between the sections move over by 1 stitch every 4 rounds, so the lines between the textures slant into parallel diagonals. Both edges are finished with a few rounds of garter stitch. The whole cowl is worked in one 8-round repeat; suitable for confident beginners.

POV Cowl brings the texture of my POV Pullover to a simple accessory. If you enjoyed the stripes in the sweater, the cowl is a smaller project to try them in.

Pattern details

Sizes & fit
One size. Designed to be worn wrapped twice around the neck.

Finished measurements (after wet blocking):
Circumference: 48 in (122 cm); width: 15 in (38 cm).

Customization
The width is easy to adjust: add or remove complete 8-round repeats (each about 0.7 in / 2 cm at pattern gauge). The pattern explains how to finish so that a C2 stripe still sits next to each C1 garter edge. Adding repeats means you will need more yarn in both colors.
Yarn
Sport weight. Two colors. Non-superwash wool with good memory and bounce is recommended for the best texture.

Yardage
C1 475 yds (434 m); C2 460 yds (421 m).
Designed in Catskill Merino Sport (100% Saxon Merino wool), C1 Purple Sage, C2 Jadeite. Yarn ideas: any other sport-weight wool of similar quality, ideally non-superwash, with good memory and bounce.

Skein counts
These are estimates based on the yardage above, with nothing extra for swatching or widening.
• Catskill Merino Sport (175 yds / 160 m per 50 g skein)
C1 3, C2 3

Needles & notions
US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle, 32 in (80 cm) long (or size needed to reach gauge); 6 stitch markers (1 distinctive for BOR), tapestry needle, scissors.

Gauge
20 sts & 44 rounds = 4 in / 10 cm in the POV texture, measured after wet blocking.
Note: This mix of stockinette and reverse stockinette tends to grow lengthwise when wet blocked, more than plain stockinette does. Your round gauge decides how wide the cowl ends up, and your stitch gauge decides its circumference.

Construction & skills
Bottom-up, seamless construction in the round; German twisted cast on; garter-stitch edges; two-color stripes in stockinette and reverse stockinette; 6 sections with moving markers that create diagonal texture lines; carrying the yarn in stripes; jogless stripes (stitch-below method); Jeny's surprisingly stretchy bind off. Schematic included. Video support via links & QR codes.

Skill level
Confident beginner. You will knit and purl in the round, manage two-color stripes, carry yarn, move markers, work into the stitch below and use a stretchy bind off. All techniques are explained in the pattern.

Swatch note
Swatch in the round in the 8-round repeat, using both colors, and wet block the swatch the same way you will block the cowl. If you are not sure how your yarn will behave, wet block the cowl after a few repeats and measure it before you decide on the final width.
